Developed by an airline pilot, Spin-a-Wind is a useful tool for calculating wind components, temperatures, altitudes, and airspeeds.

  • The headwind and crosswind components are determined based on the runway, along with the reported wind direction and speed. For airports with parallel runways, using the runway number closest to the actual magnetic heading provides the most accurate results. The app also presents results graphically, rounding up crosswind and tailwind components and rounding down headwind components to ensure conservative estimations.
  • The app features spinning reels for selection, eliminating the need for a keyboard. Results are displayed instantly once the reels stop spinning. Spin-a-Wind is designed for easy one-handed operation.
  • The second tab offers temperature conversions. Users can input temperatures in degrees Celsius to instantly view Fahrenheit conversions and the chill factor in both °C and °F using the NWS Wind Chill index adopted by the U.S. and Canada. Please note that the NWS Wind Chill index is applicable within specific temperature and wind speed ranges. Relative Humidity and Heat Stress Index calculations are based on the entered Dewpoint Temperature.
  • The third tab focuses on altitudes, including metric, pressure altitude, and density altitude. Density altitude computations are displayed for both dry air assumptions and varying levels of moisture based on the temperature/dewpoint spread provided on the temperature page.
  • The fourth tab houses the Airspeed Calculator featuring calculations for True Airspeed (TAS), Mach number, and speed of sound. The accuracy of the equations used ensures applicability even at high speeds typical of jet aircraft.
  • The fifth tab takes users to the settings page where they can configure display speed units (kts, mph, kph) and pressure units (inHg, hPa, mb). Additionally, users can set threshold points that trigger amber (caution zone) and red (aircraft limits) warnings in wind results.
